Californication Boycott

20 November 2007

Several companies have withdrawn their ads from TV3's Californication programme. The programme has shown scenes such as a nun having oral sex. The Christians are outraged. As a result, some businesses have bowed to the pressure and withdrawn their advertising.

It is not for the advertisers or the Christians to decide what people watch on TV. Some people can see the programme simply as a form of entertainment, and should be able to watch it. If advertisers were to withdraw advertising from every programme that offended someone, the only programmes left on TV would be Country Calandar and Sesame Street. That would be very boring indeed.

Society is made up of all sorts of people. Some people can find enjoyment in things that other people find offensive. That's just part of life. TV stations are quite within their rights to cater for as many people as possible. If TV3 thinks that Californication is suitable for its audience, then TV3 should be able to screen it. The Christians do not have to watch.

I will be boycotting the businesses who have withdrawn their advertising. Subway and Burger King will be the two businesses who will noticing my absence the most. If we can get enough people to boycott these companies, hopefully they will realise that boycotts aren't a great idea after all.
