Remember, Remember the Fifth of November

3 November 2007

It's that time of the year when we commemorate Guy Fawke's attempt to blow up the House of Lords by letting off fireworks. Each year, I stand out at the front gate, where I can usually get a good view of two or three (or more) fireworks displays happening in the neighbourhood. I have just been outside for this year's display - thankfully it is a mild night, with some good displays going.

I suspect that public displays will become even more popular in the future with the government placing tougher restrictions on the sale of fireworks. This year, the fireworks can only be sold in a four day period leading up to November 5. While such restrictions are sad, they are an indication of how irresponsible some members of society have become. People use fireworks in an inappropriate manner, resulting in fires and injuries.

Have we gone a full circle, with some people as irresponsible as Mr Fawkes?
