An Attempted Hijacking in New Zealand
9 February 2008
There was excitement in the office yesterday as news slowly came in about an emergency at Christchurch Airport. It turned out to be an attempt to hijack a small plane. The two pilots got injured in the process, and the airport was evacuated.
The situation raises an obvious question: why are there not more security procedures at airports? Passengers and luggage are screened where there will be more than 90 passengers on a flight. Smaller flights are not screened to help keep costs down. Personally, I would be happy to pay more for my flights in order to have screening on all flights and at all airports.
