Adelaide: the First Smoke-free City
17 December 2007
Adelaide may become the world's first smoke-free city, according to this news article. Smoking would be banned for one or two days a year.
Is it the government's job to decide what we put in to our bodies? Is it the politicians' jobs to decide what we do with our lives? For several years now, I have been annoyed that other people think that they know what is best for me. As a result, I have voted for the Libertarianz party at the last few elections. The party believes that we need to get the government out of our lives as much as possible.
Don't get me wrong. I don't like the idea of smoking. I have never smoked, and don't intend to. However, I am in favour of other people being able to make their own decisions. In the same way that I have chosen not to smoke, other people have the right to smoke if they want to.
The South Australian parliament will be making a worrying decision if they pass the bill. I hope that the residents of South Australia are packing their bags and moving to somewhere where other people don't make up their minds for them.
